My blog partner and dear friend Cynthia Arre will be one of the speakers (together with her hubby Arnold) at this year`s Graphika Manila 2010 on August 7, 2010.

Arnold and Cynthia Arre is a husband and wife art and design team who are probably best known for their individual works — Arnold for his graphic novels including “The Mythology Class”, “Ang Mundo ni Andong Agimat” and “Martial Law Babies” and Cynthia for her music packaging designs for the Eraserheads, Itchyworms, Imago, and Sandwich among others, and more recently, a 5-year stint as Design Director for Wedding Essentials magazine. Both attended the U.P. College of Fine Arts and both pursued careers in advertising right after graduating. (Funny enough, they only met and got together several years later.) Eventually they left the corporate world to start their own home-based cat-fortified studio.

Arnold & Cynthia have also collaborated on numerous print, web design and other creative projects over the past decade.Their most recent collaboration is a short independent feature film that Arnold wrote and directed himself.

Years ago, I made a check deposit to Cynthia and had an interesting conversation with the bank teller.

Bank Teller: Uhmm, excuse me ma`am, but is this Cynthia Arre the wife of Arnold Arre?
Me: (Stunned) Ahh, yes. She is.
Bank Teller: Is she your officemate?
Me: Well, in a way yes.
Bank Teller: Does Mr. Arnold pick her up at the office? Do you see him?
Me: We don`t actually have a normal office set-up.
Bank Teller: Ahh, but do you know him?
Me: (Giving her the `Are you bonkers look`) Yes….
Bank Teller: Sorry ma`am but I`m a fan, I have all his books….Pls. tell him to write more books. I`ll buy them all…

Who says bank tellers lead boring lives?
Certainly not this one.

In an alternate reality, the Eraserheads actually released an 8th final full-length album titled Waltz This Knee containing 8 new tracks by the Philippines’ fab four. This is the album’s wraparound sleeve that I designed:

In this reality however, the revolutionary team of Uno Magazine invited me to illustrate a piece written by rock music journalist Aldus Santos about an imagined final Eraserheads album for their special April 2010 (Fiction) issue. Here’s an excerpt:

“In February of this year, I got an unmarked brown envelope that bore the label “Hubad sa Kalsada [Mix-Down 001/2007].” Inside was a CDR. Playing it back, it revealed a bare, guitar-and-voice recording bearing that unmistakable falsetto (with the voice double-tracked, and with a bit of slap-back echo, a la Spector’s Lennon recordings, as in “Instant Karma”). It sounded sort of gothic folk, but sang in falsetto. This was most unusual. Insanely enough, I sometimes get unsolicited demos over e-mail from indie bands who ask for professional advice—to which I invariably say, “I’ll be as much help to you as a sack of hammers; see if there is a listing under ‘Rico Blanco’ in the white pages”—but this can’t be one of those demos. More to the fact, it is unmarked. I personally brought this up with suspect number one, Ely Buendia, but he unnaturally shifted gears, “You know what we don’t hear a lot? Good whistlers.” Such a strange, eyeliner-wearing man.”

Teddy, meet Ferdinand Magellan…

Workation is a term coined by our writer Vida Gabe to make our kind of `work` (working and thinking about work even on the few vacations we take) sound more like `less work`. And since we in the team consider one another as both `friends and family` meaning, we actually like one another very much (I believe, and hope) even if we didn`t choose to be with one another. Workation works for us.

And although we still often miss our loves every time we`re out- which is most of the time ( I miss my hubby Eths, Kitten misses her daughter Sky and Tin misses her kuya and parents). We try to compensate it by finding and having fun in every work situation we face.

Scenario 1: While waiting for the sun to set for the 2nd part of our set-up pictorial, a waiting time of about 3 hours since we finished early, WE….

…Smile, and take photo-ops with style mavens who grace us with their presence and talent. Teddy Manuel with Teresin Mendezona

…Go around, explore the place, and find ways to photograph ourselves without disturbing others…

…Sit, relax, talk about current events, our blessings and most important of all, er, our next meal…

And being the anti-social that I am (although Cheryl T. will most likely disagree), the `extra` time (a.k.a time usually alloted for Face Book, You Tube and reading people`s Twitter updates) I had while workationing there sort of forced me to part with my laptop, go out, walk around, and because of that, I found in beautiful and cosmopolitan Shanghai, these wonderful discoveries…

At Xintiandi. The Expo is the World Expo, which opens on May 1, 2010. Google it up, =) It`s why I`m going back there in June.

Black truffle xiao-lung-pao at Xintiandi. Xintianti literally means new heaven and new earth. How did the black truffle xiao-lung pao taste like? Surreal, but nice. Very nice actually,but a bit pricey. 1 RMB is 7 pesos.

The Shanghai gang: Thanks to our dear friends in Shanghai who brought us around, fed us really good food and gave us a really good time by just being with us. See you again in June Carol, Inigo, Doc Mike and Jayme. =)

For newlyweds thinking of a new place to honeymoon in, do consider Shanghai. More than its beautiful streets, interesting cuisine and culture, it`s also the venue of the World Expo. Around the world in 10 days? It`s possible in Shanghai this year, =)

2009 CNN Hero of the Year Efren Peñaflorida graced the event as the Guest of Honor.

As for the idea that brought about the partnership with Moleskine, Eala said, “Collezione-C2 is a 38-year-old brand known for innovating. From the very beginning it revolutionized the way Filipinos look at local fashion by offering high quality clothes featuring top of the line, unique designs and styles that are at par with international brands. For our design concept, we wanted to set a major trend that will make its mark as a brand that is proud to be Pinoy. The highlight of the event was the unveiling of the result of the collaboration between the brands. Eala was joined by Collezione-C2 Managing Director Joey Qua, Trina Alindogan, and Arnault Castel, General Manager of Working Unit (official distributor of Moleskine in Asia), to officially introduce the limited edition My Pilipinas Moleskine.

In his speech, Castel said, “The Moleskine has been a witness to many historical events in the world. Some of its famous users include Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, and Ernest Hemingway, whose Moleskines held a collection of invaluable drawings, sketches, notes and stories. History is again being made today with the release of My Pilipinas Moleskine. The iconic Philippine map on our legendary notebook is a symbol of the Filipino spirit, passion and limitless creativity.”

A special awarding of a My Pilipinas Moleskine notebook was held for Peñaflorida in recognition of his achievements and efforts in making education and literacy more accessible to the younger generation of Filipinos. The 28-year-old teacher and civic worker co-founded Dynamic Teen Company (DTC), which made use of the kariton classroom concept to bring values education and literacy to less fortunate, at-risk Filipino children.

Indeed, making history has never been more personal—and creative—with the My Pilipinas Moleskine.
